Harmonizing a scale
I start from a seven-note scale and show you how to work out its chords, one by one. It's the foundation for composing modal music with any scale that comes your way.

Building a scale from scratch
I build a scale note by note to understand what each one is worth: the G to C effect, the tritone, and the types of intervals. The result is the harmonic minor scale.

What a mode is
I show you how a mode comes out of any scale through cyclic permutations, all the way to the seven modes of the major scale: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. Also the difference between a mode and a scale.

The modal cartography
I organize the fourteen major and minor modes of the major, melodic minor, and harmonic minor scales into a single map, where two modes are connected if only one note changes. I also sort them by brightness.
